St. Nicholas School to Host Play-Based Learning Professional Development with Kristen Day
Preston Steger

Next month, St. Nicholas School will welcome early childhood educators from across the Chattanooga region for a full-day professional development experience focused on play-based learning and developmentally appropriate practice.

The workshop will be led by Kristen Day, a nationally recognized educator and speaker known for her work helping teachers design learning environments where curiosity, engagement, and deep understanding thrive. Kristen’s approach blends research, real classroom experience, and practical strategies that educators can immediately apply in their own settings.

The event will take place on the St. Nicholas campus on Saturday, February 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Here's what you need to know.

What Participants Can Expect

This full-day workshop is designed to be active, engaging, and practical. Participants will earn a 7-hour professional development certificate, enjoy lunch and refreshments, and leave with concrete ideas they can bring back to their classrooms right away.

The registration cost is $300, which includes the full professional development experience, materials, meals, and certification.

Because the day is hands-on by design, participants are encouraged to dress comfortably for play. You may get messy, creative, or both.

A Commitment to Strong Teaching and Thoughtful Practice

At St. Nicholas, we believe excellent schools invest in excellent teaching. Hosting professional learning opportunities like this one reflects our commitment to thoughtful, research-informed practice and to contributing positively to the broader educational community in Chattanooga.

The day will focus on play-based approaches that support how young children learn best. Through hands-on exploration and guided reflection, educators will examine how play fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and confidence. Far from being an “extra,” play is a powerful vehicle for meaningful learning and growth during the early years.

Learning That Reflects Our Values

For families considering St. Nicholas School, this event offers a glimpse into what we value as a learning community. Our classrooms are grounded in relationships, curiosity, and developmentally appropriate challenge. Hosting educators from across the region for meaningful professional learning is one way we live out those values, not just for our own students, but for the wider community we serve.
