Why St. Nicholas School
An Experience Shaped for the Elementary Years
Choosing a school is rarely just about test scores or class lists. It’s about trust, about finding a place where your child is known, challenged, and cared for, and where the pace of learning honors who they are and who they are becoming.
At St. Nicholas, we are intentionally focused on the elementary years, because this is where everything begins. Independence grows from real relationships, individualized learning, and whole-child formation that shapes character alongside academics. We believe small is powerful, because it turns values into lived experience, not just words.
What Matters to Families Here
A quick look at the values and day-to-day choices that shape the St. Nicholas experience.
Learning Begins With Being Known
In the elementary years, relationships are not a nice extra. They’re the foundation. When teachers genuinely know a child, they can teach them as an individual and help them grow into a confident, independent learner.
- Individualized support shaped around how a child learns
- Students learn to advocate for what they need
- Confidence built through trust, challenge, and care
Elementary, By Intention
Elementary is where confidence takes root, learning habits form, and children begin to understand who they are. These years don’t need to be rushed through. They deserve a school built around them.
What that looks like:
- PK3–5 learning sequenced with purpose
- Habits that help children manage their own learning
- Challenge that supports readiness, not pressure
- Real and age-appropriate leadership and responsibility
- A campus and culture built for childhood, not adolescence
A School Day With Room to Breathe
Learning is active and engaged. Students are encouraged to ask good questions, explain their thinking, and try again when something is difficult. Over time, they build depth of understanding that helps them apply concepts, not just memorize steps.
- Strong academics taught with care
- Arts, music, and enrichment woven into the week
- Chapel and community life that form character
- Outdoor discovery that keeps learning moving
Rooted in Episcopal Values
As an Episcopal school, we are grounded in love, dignity, and the belief that each child is a person of deep worth. Chapel is part of our shared rhythm, and Episcopal formation infuses how we teach, how we handle conflict, and how we celebrate growth.
Families of many backgrounds are part of our community. We don’t expect every family to believe the same things. We do expect respect, kindness, and care.
A Chattanooga Campus That Invites Childhood
Place shapes experience, especially in the elementary years. On our 24-acre campus in East Brainerd, children have room to move, explore, play, and reset. The space itself slows the pace of learning and gives childhood room to breathe.
Outdoor discovery isn’t an occasional extra. It’s part of how children build attention, curiosity, and confidence. From trails and green space to everyday moments outside, the campus becomes an extension of the classroom and a natural place for growth.
Who St. Nicholas Students Become
A St. Nicholas education is designed with an outcome in mind. Students leave prepared for what comes next, grounded in who they are, and confident in how they learn.
- Think critically and approach challenges with confidence
- Lead with empathy, humility, and integrity
- Engage their communities with purpose and care
“I just can’t say enough about this school. There is nothing like it anywhere in Chattanooga or the region, and it produces kids who are smart, thoughtful, incredibly prepared for middle school, and more importantly, prepared to live life beyond.”
