St. Nicholas School Practices Sustainability with Composting
This year, St. Nicholas School has begun a partnership with NewTerra Compost. Composting, the natural process of recycling organic matter, holds many benefits. Compost acts as a natural fertilizer in soil and prevents erosion. All members of the St. Nicholas community are taking steps towards sustainability. At the end of each lunch, students and teachers compost their leftover food and napkins. This compost will be turned into soil, which will be used in the on-campus garden.
As part of this new initiative, the Upper Primary students have been given the responsibility of managing the composting process alongside gardening teacher Rob Varner and Food Service Manager Barbara Blair. Tasked with transferring the compost bucket to the designated compost bin, these students are actively involved in the composting process. This hands-on involvement is an added component of the chores St. Nicholas students do to instill a sense of responsibility.
Through this partnership, St. Nicholas School is not only reducing its environmental footprint but also nurturing a culture of environmental consciousness and proactive engagement with eco-friendly practices.
