Chapel at St. Nicholas: Centering Moments in a Noisy World
Chapel has been at the heart of St. Nicholas since the school’s founding at Grace Episcopal Church in 1958. It’s a time for our community to gather, reflect, and offer praise to God through song, prayer, and fellowship. Each morning, Level 1 through Level 7 students join together with many parents, families, and special guests, while our PK3 students have their own weekly chapel experience until they are ready to join the traditional all-school service.
As an Episcopal school, St. Nicholas follows a simplified liturgy of the Episcopal Church, specifically designed for children. This structure offers both a sense of familiarity and routine, while also allowing space for a variety of perspectives. Our chapel program fosters an environment of open-mindedness, tolerance, and acceptance of differences, helping each child grow in their faith. We emphasize what unites us, while honoring the unique beliefs that make each of us who we are.
Chapel at St. Nicholas is a chance to pause, reflect, and find quiet in a busy world. In the midst of all the noise, chapel serves as a grounding and nurturing time for our students and school community. It’s an opportunity for growth and a deeper connection to one another, encouraging a sincere and deep love for God, ourselves, and each other.
The school year theme provides inspiration for many chapel talks, as well as classroom discussions, service projects, and school-wide activities. This year's theme, Love, Think, Serve, reinforces how we live into St. Nicholas School’s core values and mission statement.
First, as children of God, we lead with love and love one another, especially when it is hard. We are also taught to think critically and use our powers of reasoning. Finally, empowered by love and knowledge, we are better able to serve our ever-changing world in meaningful ways. By emphasizing the interconnectivity of these three actions, we will help shape children who are caring, creative, and active community members.
