Headmaster Wants Students to Impact City
By Clint Cooper Chattanooga Times Free Press
When students leave St. Nicholas School, according to new headmaster Mark Fallo, they should be able to think critically and be respectful of those around them. "For today and looking to the future, we want them to be able to impact Chattanooga," he said. "That’s an important piece of what they do."
Mr. Fallo, a native of Louisiana, assumed his responsibilities at the East Brainerd school with the start of the 2006-07 academic year. He came to St. Nicholas, which has 224 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade, from Pueblo, Colo., where he headed the McClelland School since 2001.
Kathy Hanson, chairwoman of the St. Nicholas board, said Mr. Fallo will examine the school’s curriculum and make certain "we’re delivering what we’re promising." "Mark brings a very strong understanding of elementary education and knows what is needed at that level, and the next level," she said. "He’s also a good manager, and that’s an unbeatable combination."
Mr. Fallo said among his longterm goals for the school are to build a dedicated chapel and fine arts building. St. Nicholas students currently attend daily chapel services in the gymnasium. "We’d like to give the chapel prominence and increase our presence in fine arts," he said. The new headmaster said he also would like to see the school take advantage of its surrounding green space. "I’d like to see us develop more of an outdoor component, plant gardens, make a connection to the environment and take care of our resources," he said.
Lisa Brown, president of the school’s parents association, said Mr. Fallo already has improved communication for parents and will use his administrative background to improve the school’s already strong academic reputation. "He has already shown great leadership for the school," she said.
Mr. Fallo said he wants the students at the independent, Episcopal school to grow in their spirituality and continue their history of being respectful of people of all faiths. "We’re very inclusive," he said. "That’s part of our tradition."
Mr. Fallo replaced the Rev. Canon Louis H. Hayden, who was interim head of school during the search to replace the Rev. Michael E. Robinson.

The board of trustees of St. Nicholas School announces the appointment of Mark Fallo as the new head of school. Mark will assume his responsibilities on July 1, 2006, and succeeds The Reverend Canon Louis H. Hayden, who was acting as interim head of school during the search to replace former head The Reverend Michael E. Robinson.
Mark moves to Chattanooga from Pueblo, Colorado, where he was head of school at The McClelland School. A native of Louisiana, Mark began his career in independent education at Saint Paul’s Episcopal School in his hometown of New Orleans. He worked at Saint Paul’s for three years. In 1992, Mark moved to Houston, Texas, to become a member of the faculty at St. Francis Episcopal Day School. He remained at St. Francis for 9 years where he started as a middle school teacher and completed his tenure as the director of the lower school.
Mark earned a B.A. in English from Louisiana State University in 1988 and continued his educational pursuits, securing a M.Ed. in elementary education from the University of Houston in 1998.
Curtis Baggett, a member of the St. Nicholas board of trustees and director of development at The McCallie School, led the search to identify the new head of school. Curtis remarked that the search committee was quickly impressed by Mark and his notable career experience. "Mark is a proven leader and is well respected among his peers in independent education. He will be an asset to St. Nicholas and the broader Chattanooga community."
Kathy Hanson, president of the St. Nicholas board of trustees and the vice president of advancement and external affairs at The Baylor School, complimented the extraordinary work of the search committee and the unyielding dedication of Curtis Baggett. "St. Nicholas will reap the benefit of Curtis’ leadership. Curtis was focused, careful and relentless throughout the entire search. He was eager to identify the best possible candidate to lead St. Nicholas, and we are thrilled to have Mark Fallo and his family joining our community." Interim head, Louis Hayden also noted, "I had the pleasure of working with Mark at St. Francis Episcopal Day School in Houston. He was an outstanding division principal at St. Francis and became a leader among the faculty. His ability to lead at St. Francis laid the foundation for his role as head of school at The McClelland School. The search committee could not have found a more dedicated, qualified, and capable individual to direct the vision for St. Nicholas School."
Mark moves to Chattanooga with his wife, Monica, and their two sons, Carson and Conner. The Fallo family was quick to find Chattanooga welcoming. "Chattanooga is a lovely and beautiful city. We enjoy outdoor activities and know we will enjoy exploring Tennessee." Additionally, Mark commented, "I am looking forward to working at St. Nicholas. The school offers a dynamic and exceptional educational experience, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to participate in its future."
