Certain, confident, and self-assured students move into Middle Primary, which is conventionally known as grade three.  Middle Primary at St. Nicholas is a time when students become more self-sufficient and self-reliant. Children at this age are recognizing their individuality and are becoming aware of social issues and friendships.

In Middle Primary, St. Nicholas students settle into the rhythms of school and are very familiar with managing their work and time.  They are supported by the Middle Primary teachers who are trained specialists and understand the nuances of educating children during this intermediary stage.  Middle Primary is where these young learners noticeably become accountable.

As noted, students enter Middle Primary ready to take on more responsibility and to improve their proficiency for managing their time and their work.  Teachers continue to foster independence and reinforce this ideal in each subject area. In consultation with their teachers, children learn how to plan for each day as well how to plan for the next month.  They begin to identify priorities and establish goals.  Additionally, students realize their distinct strengths, and they are encouraged to pursue those strengths within the organization of a self-paced program in math and language arts.  With careful planning and implementation, the curriculum includes special options and projects that invite children to demonstrate and apply their knowledge broadly as well as specifically.
